But in an away game against a dangerous if slightly out-of-form Spurs team, perhaps the defensive solidity and ability to break with wing-backs could be effective. Bournemouth end the season away at Crystal Palace, while Tottenham have a trip to the Netherlands to come next as they face Ajax in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final.
There goes the final whistle! Ake's late header gives the Cherries their first-ever league win against Tottenham as they continue their remarkable run of never losing their final Premier League home game of the season and ending their poor run of five games without a win at the Vitality. Spurs were reduced to nine men after Son and substitute Foyth were sent off either side of half-time, while Dier was lucky not to concede a penalty and escape a second yellow himself. Debutant goalkeeper Travers was sensational in the first half for the hosts but had little to do in the second period. Spurs pass up the chance to confirm their top-four spot, and now need Manchester United to drop points and Arsenal to lose to wrap things up before the final day. It finishes 1-0 to Bournemouth!
FULL-TIME: BOURNEMOUTH 1-0 TOTTENHAM
MISS! Sanchez flicks a cross on to Lucas and the Brazilian tries a spectacular bicycle kick, but it flies over the bar! That's the last kick of the game!
Lerma, too, is booked, much to the travelling fans' delight.
Alli sees yellow for something he said to the referee as opposed to any involvement in the altercation.
Wanyama is booked for his role in confronting Lerma.
An altercation breaks out between the two sets of players and the referee will have some cards to dish out. Spurs are furious with Lerma, who is in the thick of things again.
Fraser - who has created chance after chance - finally gets the assist he deserves as his well-taken corner is powered home.
GOAL!!! Bournemouth finally take the lead against the nine men of Tottenham!! Fraser whips another excellent cross into the box and Ake drifts to the back post to power a header into the back of the net! It's 1-0 to Bournemouth!
CHANCES! How have Bournemouth not scored?! The corner is taken short and Fraser sends it into the middle. Mousset flicks it goalwards but Wilson can't force it home from close range and Ake's effort is blocked behind for another corner!
Bournemouth look frustrated. They just don't look like breaking Spurs down and haven't created anything of note in the last 10 minutes or so.
Nine-man Spurs have ventured bravely forward now and are looking to snatch an unlikely winner. They could find themselves caught out at the back, however.
NO PENALTY! Lucas gets forward well and races towards a ball forward with Cook, who plays it behind for a corner. There are shouts from the away fans for a penalty, but the ball didn't appear to strike his hand and the forward went down a little easily. No penalty looks to be the right decision.
Sissoko, having picked up a slight knock, is replaced by Davies, who slots in alongside Sanchez at centre-half.
SAVE! Big chance for Mousset as Fraser creates yet another opportunity from a wide area. His pinpoint cross is met powerfully by the head of Mousset, but the striker can only direct his header straight at Lloris, who holds on!
MISS! Mousset, having just come on, lashes a woeful effort wide from outside the box. Not what his manager would have been hoping for.
Howe throws French striker Mousset on for a winger in Ibe. He needs a cutting edge now to make the most of their numerical advantage.
MISS! Fraser fizzes a low ball to the near post but Wilson makes scruffy contact with the ball and sends it harmlessly wide from a very promising position.
There's an altercation between Lerma and Rose as the Bournemouth player tries to wrestle the ball from his counterpart. The referee talks to all involved and issues a word of warning.
SAVE! Ibe drifts inside Eriksen from the left and thumps a fierce effort towards the far corner. Despite the power, it's a nice height for Lloris, who palms clear!
MISS! Awful effort from Clyne. The ball is fizzed low into the middle from the right and it breaks for the right-back inside the box. He shoots on the swivel and it's well wide of the goal.
MISS! Fraser lofts the ball into the middle from a deep position on the right, but Wilson just can't direct his header goalwards and it drifts wide of the post!
MISS! The corner is headed out as far as Smith, but the full-back lashes his effort harmlessly over the bar. What a waste.
BLOCK! Tottenham's attack breaks down with Alli and Bournemouth break quickly. Wilson gets the ball on the left outside the box and strikes at goal, but it's blocked behind for a corner.
Spurs make a rare foray into Bournemouth territory as they get a foot on the ball. They have to be careful not to leave themselves exposed.
Fraser earns another corner down the left but, just as before, the Cherries give away a foul in the middle and waste the opportunity.
Bournemouth win a corner, but they haven't yet looked like making the most of their numerical advantage. It's been a bit flat since the second sending-off. The set-piece comes to nothing as a foul is given Tottenham's way.
Ibe is having a go down the right but he's not been able to get the better of Sissoko or Rose just yet.
Bournemouth have Spurs penned inside their own area. Lerma stands a cross up to the back post but it's too long and Fraser retrieves it. It comes back in but it's overhit again and drifts behind for a goal-kick.
SAVE! Ake plays it wide to Fraser on the left side of the box. The winger curls a low effort at goal with his first touch but it's a little tame and Lloris can gather.
A couple of fouls spoil the momentum of the game from both sides. It's very open now, and Spurs need to prevent the hosts from building up a head of steam.
Bournemouth are in control now. Sissoko has dropped in alongside Sanchez at centre-back, leaving Wanyama, Eriksen and Alli in midfield and Lucas up front on his own.
Ake has gone down and receives some treatment on the halfway line. A chance for Tottenham to regroup, perhaps.
RED CARD! Substitute Foyth has barely been on the field and, after a heavy touch, he slides in with his studs up into Simpson's knee! Another rush of blood to the head sees Spurs down to nine men at the start of the second half!
We're off again for the second half!
Foyth comes on for Alderweireld at centre-back in the second change.
Pochettino makes a double-change at half-time, with the reckless Dier being replaced by Wanyama in the first substitution.
Pochettino will have to calm his side down at the break. Their aggression levels have bubbled over and Dier in particular looks to be out of control. Son's sending-off has changed the complexion of the game, and Spurs face an uphill battle to secure their top-four spot today.
And breathe! What a first half! Debutant Bournemouth goalkeeper Travers - having almost been lobbed early on - has produced a string of fine saves to keep Tottenham out, and Son was sent off late in the half for a shove on Lerma. It's been an end-to-end affair and Spurs are lucky not to be down to nine men, with Dier - already on a yellow - producing two further challenges worthy of a booking, one of which was in the penalty area! Somehow, it's still 0-0 at the break.
HALF-TIME: BOURNEMOUTH 0-0 TOTTENHAM
SAVE! Ake's header is blocked and goes out for a corner, and Simpson meets the second delivery well, but it's held well by Lloris in the centre of the goal!
MISS! Wilson meets Fraser's cross in the box but can only loop his header high over the bar! Bournemouth have a real opportunity now.
RED CARD! Son is off! Fraser fouls him but Lerma comes in late after the whistle has gone and tries to nick the ball. He's furious and shoves the Bournemouth midfielder to the ground, and is shown a straight red card! Spurs down to 10 men!
NO PENALTY! Wilson goes down in the box and Dier, in trying to clear the ball as an attack came down the left, kicks through the back of the Cherries striker's legs! However, the referee doesn't spot it and waves play on! Dier is lucky not to have conceded a penalty and be sent off!
Ake chests the ball cleverly past Sissoko and the midfielder drags him back in midfield, picking up the third yellow card of the game.
SAVES! Bournemouth whip a fierce cross into the middle of a crowded box that King meets, but Lloris dives bravely to hold on. At the other end, Eriksen tests Travers with a low, left-footed effort, but the Bournemouth keeper collects it comfortably.
NO PENALTY! Alderweireld misjudges a ball over the top and King latches onto it. He pokes the ball past the onrushing Lloris and clatters into him before going down. The Vitality bellow for a spot-kick but the referee shakes his head.
NO RED CARD! Dier goes diving into another challenge and gets none of the ball. Bournemouth want to see a second yellow card for the midfielder, however, the referee deems it a fair challenge and Spurs play on, with Son whipping a cross towards Alli at the back post, but he's crowded out and has to play it back for Eriksen and Lucas, whose speculative efforts are blocked.
SAVE! WHAT A SAVE! Travers continues to impress on his debut as Rose picks out Alli in the box with a sumptuous cross, but the midfielder's powerful header just under the bar is tipped over by a diving Travers! Outstanding save!
MISS! Son drives into the box as Spurs counter down the left and works a yard of space cleverly, but blazes over the bar on his left!
BLOCK! Eriksen then has an effort from outside the box after receiving the ball from Rose, but it's blocked away. Tottenham starting to ramp up the pressure now.
Son drives down the right and drifts into the box past a defender. However, he takes one touch too many and is forced backwards. He tries to square it across the edge of the box but Fraser puts in an important sliding challenge to clear the danger.
SAVE! Another great stop from Travers! Lucas finds himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper on the left after timing his run, but the teenager stays big and keeps out what looked to be a certain goal!
BLOCK! Fraser whips the free-kick into the middle and Wilson meets it with his head but it's blocked away and Spurs break. Travers then comes off his line bravely to the edge of his box and heads clear!
The move breaks down on the edge of the Bournemouth box and King charges down the left to lead a counter-attack. Alderweireld gets across and chops King down, earning himself a yellow card.
Spurs have set up camp on the edge of the Bournemouth area and are passing it around sharply. There's no penetration as yet, however, and the Cherries keep their shape well.
SAVE! Great save from Travers! Sissoko plays a splitting, first-time ball behind Simpson and into Lucas, who takes it well and bears down on goal. His strike is fierce and high but a little central, and the teenager does well to tip it over the bar!
Cook appears to be struggling with an injury. He's playing on at the moment but doesn't look to be moving freely. That's a concern for Bournemouth.
SAVE! Alli produces a lovely turn to evade two Bournemouth defenders and thumps an effort at goal, but Travers gets across well to keep it out!
OFFSIDE! Trippier is set up for a first-time cross that he lofts into the box. Lucas meets it with his head but can only direct it wide and the flag is up against the forward anyway, who was fractionally offside.
CLOSE! Fraser dusts himself down and stands over the free-kick. He tries to whip it over the wall and into the corner but doesn't get quite enough curl on it and it whistles past the upright.
Dier lunges in late on Fraser as he charges through the middle and picks up a deserved yellow card.
At 19 years of age, Travers is the first teenage keeper to start in the Premier League since 2006. He nearly marked his debut with an embarrassing moment there but would have been grateful to see the ball drop the wrong side of the post. He could be a busy man today.
CLOSE! Young goalkeeper Travers is outside of his box and Lucas sees him off his line and attempts to lob him audaciously from some distance out! However, the ball drops marginally wide of the left-hand post! What a goal that would have been!
Trippier tries to play a one-two with Sissoko and get down the line, but he hasn't got the legs to get on the end of the return ball and it just drifts out of play.
Trippier plays it forward down the right for Lucas, but the Brazilian had just strayed offside.
Son then returns the favour, pressing Cook as he received the ball in his own half. The Cherries skipper seemed unaware of the forward's presence and hacks clear in a panic after seeing him.
Bournemouth start positively as Lerma presses Son in the Spurs half and earns a throw-in. It's worked high into the box but Trippier manages to head clear at the back post.
Tottenham get the game underway!
Furthermore, Tottenham have lost 12 Premier League games this season, last losing more in a single campaign in 2008-09 (15). Only two teams have ever lost more than 12 Premier League games and still finished in the top four - Chelsea in 1997-98 (15) and Everton in 2004-05 (13).
Bournemouth may take solace in the dramatic dip in Tottenham's away form in the last few months, however. Until the end of January, Spurs had won more away games (11), more away points (33) and scored more away goals (30) than any other Premier League side this season. Since then, they're one of just two sides not to earn a single point on the road along with Huddersfield (L5).
The visitors may well feel confident of doing so today, boasting an excellent record against their hosts. Spurs average 3.1 goals per game in the Premier League against Bournemouth (22 goals in seven games), their best such record against any side in the competition. Additionally, Bournemouth have lost six of their seven Premier League meetings with Tottenham (D1), netting just twice in that run.
Spurs can confirm their top-four spot with a win today and guarantee Champions League football for next season with one game to spare.
Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino makes three changes from the Tottenham side that were beaten 1-0 by Ajax in the Champions League last time out. Wanyama and Llorente start the day on the bench, while Jan Vertonghen is missing after sustaining a head injury in that game. Harry Kane, Serge Aurier, Erik Lamela and Harry Winks are also sidelined through injury. Dier, Sissoko and Son come into the side.
Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe makes four changes to the side that drew 3-3 with Southampton in their last game. Veteran keeper Boruc drops to the bench alongside Mepham to hand 19-year-old Travers his debut, while David Brooks and Dan Gosling join a lengthy injury list including Dominic Solanke, Lewis Cook, Simon Francis, Junior Stanislas, Charlie Daniels and Andrew Surman. Smith, Fraser and Ibe come into the starting line-up.
Bournemouth substitutes: Sam Surridge, Kyle Taylor, Emerson Hyndman, Chris Mepham, Artur Boruc, Lys Mousset, Nnamdi Ofoborh
Bournemouth XI (4-4-1-1): Mark Travers; Nathaniel Clyne, Steve Cook, Jack Simpson, Adam Smith; Jordon Ibe, Jefferson Lerma, Nathan Ake, Ryan Fraser; Joshua King; Callum Wilson
Tottenham substitutes: Fernando Llorente, Victor Wanyama, Juan Foyth, Ben Davies, Paulo Gazzaniga, Oliver Skipp, Vincent Janssen
Tottenham XI (4-1-2-1-2): Hugo Lloris; Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Danny Rose; Eric Dier; Moussa Sissoko, Christian Eriksen; Dele Alli; Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min

Pa po pe video. Arsenal head to Spurs on Saturday knowing victory and Wembley will blow the race for the top four wide open in the Premier League.
Just a week ago Tottenham were eying a potential title assault, but after back to back defeats they are now looking nervously over their shoulders at the teams behind them.
An Arsenal win on Saturday will see them move just one point behind their rivals in third, with Manchester United and Chelsea also breathing down their necks.
Suddenly what appeared to be a battle between three teams for fourth spot would become a fight between four teams for third.

'Kolasinac is having a problem in his [leg] muscle,' Emery explained. 'Sometimes he is telling us to rest him in some matches, some minutes.
'The first half he finished well but in the dressing he said he was feeling some pain. He could continue, but I prefer to change him for rest and also he played Sunday with a big intensity.'
Emery is hopeful both players will be fit to feature against Spurs and the same goes for Ainsley Maitland-Niles (illness) and Stephan Lichtsteiner (back) who missed out against Bournemouth.
